Supes Hold Meeting On Apple Moth
POSTED: 10:29 am PDT April 7, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO --
A San Francisco Board of Supervisors committee held a meeting Monday
on possible aerial chemical spraying in the city to remove the invasive
light brown apple moth.
A resolution introduced by Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi would oppose
aerial spraying by the state Department of Food and Agriculture, which
could take place in San Francisco this summer, in favor of "least-toxic"
ground-based options.
The resolution also calls for the state to conduct a long-term
study of health and environmental impacts of aerial spraying that has
already taken place in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, and for state
legislation requiring the consent of residents before any aerial spraying.
The light brown apple moth is considered a serious threat to plants
and agricultural crops.
The hearing before the Board's Government Audit and Oversight
Committee began at 10 a.m. in Room 250 at City Hall.
