Dear
CASS members,
Thank you for coming to the Santa Cruz City Council's Annual
Legislative Agenda meeting with State Senator Joe Simitian and State Assemblyman
John Laird.
To say that your presence was felt would be a big understatement.
And, filling the room to overflowing with some folks out in the lobby drove home
our point exquisitely!
And, I have a very positive result to report.
At
the end of the meeting, I moved to adopt the City's Legislative agenda with the
addition of a legislative item setting forth new regulation of aerial spraying
of chemicals based on the requests from the public in the petition already given
to John and Joe, on the suggested legislation from David Dillworth, and also on
the suggestion I brought forth requiring that only the Governor could authorize
such spraying and only after making findings that an emergency exists that poses
a threat to lives and property. Because the precise nature of the legislation
is not yet written, my motion specifies that the language will be crafted by our
legislators using their best judgment of what can actually be enacted.
The
motion passed by a unanimous vote of the City Council.
You are all
to be commended for providing the atmosphere to make this happen!
Thanks
again to all who attended this meeting! I'm very satisfied with this result because
we could not have expected anything more than this today. And, of course, it will
be up to us to stay in communication with John & Joe's legislative offices in
Sacramento and keep a close watch on what they come up with.
But, all in
all, a great effort that yielded the right result!
Ed Porter
PS,
please feel free to forward this to our other members!
